some sad news

i am sure that most of you who read this blog have heard by now, but tonight President Gordon B. Hinckley--the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints--passed away at the age of 97. it might seem odd for me, at the ripe age of 23, to feel so personally impacted by this loss, but i can honestly say that President Hinckley has been one of the most influential figures of my life.

every message that i have heard President Hinckley deliver has felt inspired to help guide my own personal life. his messages have always filled my life with love, an increased understanding of myself and my life's purpose, and appreciation for the Savior and the wonderful men and women who made so many sacrifices to make my life as full and blessed as it is today. i know that he was, and is, a man of God.

President Hinckley is one of those few people that left the world a truly better place than he found it, and i feel honored to have observed his life and felt the powerful influence of his example.

speaking of heath...

i think he is hilarious. at three years of age, he has some much better lines and moves than i do. for proof that my nephew is much funnier than yours (no offense to all the potentially wonderful nephews i may have just demoted), here is a video of him playing guitar hero a few weeks ago. my brother-in-law took the liberty to dub the audio for the song that heath was playing, but i recommend watching at least the first thirteen seconds. they are the best.

starting the waiting game

i am pleased to announce that my dear, sweet husband has finally finished his pharmacy school applications. that's right, we are now waiting to see who finds jesse fit to wear the white coat. i fear that in the process of getting all of his applications done that he didn't quite get a break, but i am really excited for and proud of him.

jesse applied to four schools of varying geographical locations. however, my dad informed me that my mom has been praying faithfully that we go to ISU--approximately thirty minutes away from my parents' house. my dad then informed us that we would have little choice in the matter as my mother is a VERY faithful woman. who are we to argue against such stalwart obedience?

anyway, here's to my intelligent and hardworking husband! and here's to hoping (and praying!) that everything works out...

it's either this or a rant about school starting

anyone that associated with me between 2001-2003 may have noticed my love for tolkien and my interest in hobbit studies (to think it all started with mrs. french insisting on reading the entirety of The Hobbit aloud, despite her lisp... my preciouth-th-th). on a tangent, here is a list of all the reasons that hobbits rock:

  • they are little but not in a creepy way--i prefer to think that we share this characteristic
  • they prefer round doors--much more aesthetically pleasing than whatever boards it is that we hang on our houses
  • they prefer to not leave their homes (something i relate to more and more as i burrow into the remainder of my christmas break), but the courageous ones do when their bravery is needed
  • they really, really like their food and never miss a snack
  • they have really great names (check out http://www.chriswetherell.com/hobbit/ for your own hobbit name. jesse and i are Dimple and Lila Boffin of Whitfurrows)
  • they have excellent willpower (see the video below for more information)

i am not ashamed to admit that Return of the King was the first book to ever make me cry (now i mostly wish that i could turn that emotional function off), Eowyn is still my favorite feminist character of all time, and that I have kept a pair of awful pajama pants for five years simply because my college roommates referred to them as my "hobbit pants."

for christmas, i gave jesse the flight of the conchords tv series on dvd. needless to say, it's been on our minds. they have developed a bit of a cult following, but if you don't know who they are, they describe themselves as new zealand's original parody folk duo and have certainly warranted the occassional youtube visit.

i enjoy this clip because it combines some great fotc humor with one of my life's main passions: The Lord of the Rings. i fear it has been too long since i have tried to spread the good word about lotr (i'm trying a lot of acronyms in order to build credibility--is it working?), so with no further ado...

a stroll down memory lane

today, while attempting to make some order out of our wee bit of space, i stumbled upon a disc jesse made a while back with some pictures of us as children. after seeing jesse's tiny face, i came to one conclusion: we must procreate. some examples:

though my friends and family are doing their best, the world needs more ridiculously adorable children. if i must be the vessel, so be it.

and though i may have been a bit risque as a little one (yowza, that's quite a pose)

i had my redeeming moments...
